LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Dec. 18 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 18, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Dec. 18, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Headline was sloppy I was dismayed to see the headline in the Nation and World section of the Thursday, Dec. 10 edition — an article titled "Campaign 2016 Donald Trump." The title words I object to are "Attention Deficit." I read with interest to see the possible correlation between the content of the article and the diagnosis of ADHD. I found instead a lengthy dialog about the political implications of Donald Trump's behaviors, etc. ADHD is a diagnosis that should not be discussed by Thomas Beaumont and Julie Bykowicz of The Associated Press without consulting a mental health professional. In this case, it appeared to be used as a sort of ridiculing statement, related to the behaviors of a presidential candidate. As a professional who diagnoses and treats children and adults with ADHD, I find this sloppy journalism to be more that sloppy. It is offensive and insulting to those who are working help their family member with this diagnosis to succeed in life with this challenging diagnosis. Mutual respect for those with mental health diagnoses and the general public can begin to foster acceptance and support instead of ridicule and bullying. Please be more selective about what you print. Jo Anne Smith, LCSW Grants Pass Gun crime is down Like most people who are not part of the gun culture (over half the citizens of the United States are gun owners), John Kloetzel of Ashland (Dec. 9) doesn't understand how law-abiding citizens can easily purchase assault weapons. The simple answer is that they can't. Just as bolt action repeating rifles became popular after World War I among veterans who trained with them, modern sporting rifles, like the AR-15, are now very popular. While any firearm, baseball bat, knife or automobile can be criminally used as a murder weapon, criminal misuse of firearms barely makes a statistic in the over 400 million firearms in the United States. Criminal misuse of rifles is even less. In fact, violent crime involving firearms has been cut by more than half over the last 20 years and firearms accidents are at an all-time low. Of course that doesn't make any death by murder, suicide, or accident any less tragic. By definition, assault rifles are military rifles capable of fully automatic fire (machine guns). While any qualified, law abiding citizen can purchase a machine gun, they are not common and virtually no legally owned machine guns have been used in crimes. With a little research, he would learn that this great land of ours, the United States, toppled the government of Iran in 1953 and installed the tyrannical leader, the Shah of Iran. We toppled the government at the behest of England because England wanted access to Iranian oil In 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq over a lie told to us by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. This invasion cost the lives of 6,000 men and women of our brave military and also murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis. Before accepting the notion that the men and women of countries in the Middle East hate us because of our "way of life," we should take a long, hard look at our attitudes and actions we have and continue to display toward the people of this region. Remember, we have occupied their countries, and how radical is that?
