Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend June 28, 2005 Police use stun gun on man with an ax Medford police used a stun gun Monday to subdue and arrest a man who threatened an officer with an ax at the Rogue Valley Transportation District station in downtown Medford. Medford police officers were called to the transfer station at Front and East Ninth streets at 10:53 a.m., when they found 40-year-old transient John D. Hackett sitting on the grass with an ax, police said. Witnesses told police that Hackett, whom police described as standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 300 pounds, was sitting in the grass, sharpening the ax and behaving strangely, police said. When a bus driver approached and told Hackett that he could not carry the ax onto a bus, Hackett reportedly became agitated, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. When police arrived, they found Hackett sitting on the grass with the ax lying near him, Moran said. When officers approached Hackett, Hackett stood up quickly and held the ax in a threatening manner toward police, Moran said. After Hackett refused demands to drop the ax, an officer struck Hackett with a TASER brand stun device, which caused Hackett to drop the ax and comply with orders, police said. Police took Hackett into custody on a charge of attempted first-degree assault, two counts of menacing and one count of disorderly conduct. He was lodged at the Jackson County Jail, where he was being held Monday in lieu of $55,000 bail, a jail spokeswoman said.
