Illinois Valley edges past Phoenix CAVE JUNCTION � Jesse Russell and Justin Neville led the way with 18 points each as Illinois Valley outlasted Phoenix 59-57 in Skyline Conference boys basketball Friday. The Pirates, 3-4 in Skyline, had two chances to tie the game with seconds left in the fourth quarter. Kevin Jeffers missed a 15-foot jump shot and Sean Murphy missed a short offensive rebound put back as time expired. The Cougars (13-4, 5-2 Skyline) had a nine-point lead in the third quarter but the Pirates battled back to go in front by two in the fourth. "Phoenix worked real hard to stay in the game," Illinois Valley coach Jeff Brimhall said. "It was a nip and tuck game all the way." With the Pirates clinging to a 53-51 lead in the fourth quarter the Cougars forced a turnover and Russell converted two free throws at the other end. On the ensuing possession the Pirates turned the ball over again and junior Daniel Houston put back a miss to give the Cougars the lead for good. Houston recorded a double-double for the Cougars with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Neville added five assists and Russell was 7-for-8 from the free throw line including 2-for-3 in the fourth quarter.
