With the game at the Rogue River football stadium, the playing surface is about 20 yards shorter and more narrow than the average soccer field. "We were having some real difficulty adjusting to the field size," Phoenix coach John Doty said. "It really increased the pace at which a ball could transition from end-to-end because of the lack of yardage." The Pirates got an early goal when Kat Cox’s corner kick was pinballing around in front of the Chiefs’ net and Larissa Wiltrout got a foot on the ball and put it away at the fifth minute. Sarah Kieffer and Marcy Kilmek teamed up on the first of two Pirates’ goals. Kilmek carried the ball up the sideline, then dropped a pass to Kieffer outside the penalty area. Kieffer launched a shot from about 25 yards into the net for a 2-0 Pirate lead. Rogue River kept itself in the game on Christina Malare’s breakaway goal late in the first half. Neither team could penetrate the other’s defense for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Then the Kieffer-Kilmek duo struck again at the 56th minute. Kilmek took the ball to the end line and put it in front of the goal, and Kieffer converted from close range. "We got great combination play involving Sarah Kieffer and Marcy Kilmek," said Doty. "We were doing a good job of putting the ball to the flank and bringing it back in the middle. We were looking to pass and moving well off the ball." Wiltrout completed the scoring at the 78th minute with an assist from Kelly Riley. Phoenix had a big advantage in shots, 26-4, and took seven corner kicks to none for Rogue River Doty praised Mara Supan for her defensive performance. "It was her organization back there that was responsible for limiting the number of shots taken by them." HIDDEN VALLEY 2, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 — At Merlin, Kate O’Brien gave Cascade Christian (3-2, 1-1 District 6) a 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the match, but Hidden Valley countered with two first-half goals and the teams played to a scoreless second half. Hidden Valley freshman Bryel Nowak scored unassisted from 12 yards at the 23 minute to tie the game. The Mustangs (4-3, 2-1 District 6) got the game-winner six minutes later when junior defender Amber Jones bent a corner kick inside the far post. Hidden Valley outshot the Challengers, 30-7. HENLEY 10, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Becky Schwartz, Heather Olliffe and Kim Lashley each scored twice in the first half as Henley managed a 7-0 halftime lead. Sara Kerns added the other first-half goal for the Hornets (4-1-1, 2-0 District 6), with Chelsey Hornbeck, Tara Campbell and Maria Ortega scoring in the second half. Hornbeck gave way in goal to Schwartz in the second half, and the Hornets had a 17-3 edge in shots on goal. ST. MARY’S 4, MAZAMA 1 — Mazama scored its first goal of the season seven minutes into the match and led for most of the half before St. Mary’s rebounded for a home District 6 win. St. Mary’s, which had defeated Mazama 6-0 a week earlier, got goals at the 31st minute from Katie MacDiarmid to tie it and another from her two minutes into the second half. The first score was unassisted, the second off a throw-in from Lauren Huizinga. At the 43rd minute, Megan Frankel one-touched a nifty corner kick from Erin Chamberlain to make it 3-1. Kayla Eichamer closed the scoring at the 54th minute. The Crusaders (5-2-1, 2-1 District 6) had a season-high 40 shots to Mazama’s two. The Vikings’ goal came on a penalty kick by Caitlin Lochrie. Skyline Boys NORTH VALLEY 2, HENLEY 0, OT — At Merlin, North Valley finally broke through in the second 10-minute overtime with goals by foreign exchange students Kristph Handke and Diego Hypolito. Handke, from Germany, scored close in off a through ball from Kaylan Smith at the 14th minute. The Brazilian Hypolito provided an insurance goal in the final minute from 30 yards out. J.B. Handley was credited with the assist. North Valley senior first-year goalie Kevin McCullough registered the shutout. The Knight defense was led by sophomore Ben Maue and senior Brian King. ILLINOIS VALLEY 1, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Cave Junction, Greg Crowl’s goal at the 60th minute proved to be the difference between previously winless Skyline Conference foes. Crowl got his foot on the ball during a scramble in front of the Chieftain (0-6 Skyline) net and the ball rolled in for the winning score. The game was evenly played. Most of the action took place at midfield, with both teams having limited scoring opportunities. District 3 Boys ST. MARY’S 2, SANTIAM CHRISTIAN 0 — At Corvallis, Greg Gradwell needed only two saves to post his fifth shutout of the season in leading St. Mary’s to its fourth straight district victory. Michael Staver scored an unassisted goal in the 40th minute on a free ball in front of the goal, and Sean Snider made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute with his half-volley off a corner kick by Austin Grant. St. Mary’s (7-1, 4-0 District 3) outshot Santiam Christian 17-3.
