Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 5, 2006 Wilkerson gives Raiders victory over Great Falls Raider Roundup GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Taylor Wilkerson’s victory sealed Southern Oregon University’s 20-15 dual wrestling win over fourth-ranked University of Great Falls Saturday. The victory was especially sweet for the former Crater High standout. Just a night before, Wilkerson lost a major decision in the final bout of a one-point loss to unranked Montana State-Northern. On Saturday, Wilkerson’s pin in 30 seconds over Eric Hinebauch at 285 pounds assured the seventh-ranked Raiders (13-4) an upset win. "(Wilkerson) put on the big squeeze," said Southern Oregon coach Mike Ritchey. "It was redemption for him. That was nice." The back-and-forth match featured 12 NAIA-ranked wrestlers — seven for Great Falls and five for the Raiders. Advertisement Southern Oregon’s top-ranked Jimmy Grochowsky registered his 30th victory of the season with a 5-3 decision over fourth-ranked Ryan Smith at 165. Two other ranked Raiders, Jimmy Ulrey (149) and Rick Story (184), were successful in their matches. Ulrey won a 9-6 decision and Story posted a 19-4 technical fall win. "We wrestled tough," said Ritchey. "We just had to pick it up and move forward after we overlooked those guys last night. This was definitely a good win." Women’s Basketball OREGON TECH 72, SOUTHERN OREGON 62 — At Klamath Falls, Oregon Tech overcame an early deficit with deft 3-point shooting from its guards en route to a Cascade Conference victory. After trailing 7-2 in the opening moments and 13-10 nine minutes into the contest, the fourth-place Owls (19-6, 10-4 CC) responded by capturing their seventh straight over the eighth-place Raiders (11- 14, 4-10). OIT broke away from a 15-all deadlock through the opening 10 minutes with a 17-8 run en route to a 32-25 halftime advantage. Oregon Tech guards Samantha Gilbert (2-for-3), Kelsi Haylett (3-for-5), Amanda Doherty (2-for-3) and Tabitha Cook (1-for-1) went a combined 8-for-12 from beyond the arc in helping OIT build a 52-34 advantage with 12 minutes remaining. Southern Oregon fought back to within eight (68-60) with 1:14 remaining, fueled by six straight points from sophomore point guard Chelsey Zimmerman, who proceeded to foul out with a game-high 22 points along with five assists. Junior post Kelsey Richards went 5-for-7 for 14 points for SOU, and junior forward Emily Brough was one away from equaling a career-best for rebounds with 15. The Raiders shot 21 of 45 (47 percent) from the field, but the Owls went 22-for-50 (44 percent) and finished with a 29-26 rebounding edge. OIT also scored 22 points off 18 SOU turnovers. Haylett led four Owls in double digits for scoring with 18, and the team finished 8-for-17 from 3-point distance.
