Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 30, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 30, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 30, 1915 POOR AIM SAVES PRACTICAL JOKERS FROM A TRAGEDY The poor marksmanship of William Battle, (black) porter at the Bates brothers' barbershop, presented a tragedy for a couple of practical jokers Sunday night. Two unknown boys stopped at the window of Battle's bedroom in a house on South Bartlett Street and began to talk about cutting the screen and robbing him. He listened to their plotting for 10 or 15 minutes, and then, highly excited, fired two shots from his six-shooter. The fact that he was unable to hit the open window saved injury to the two. This morning Battle called upon Chief of Police Hittson, and announced that he had killed a man. Battle says that after he fired the shots, he saw a man fall in the garden. He did not sleep all night for worry over what he believed to be a fatal ending. The police investigated the room and found where two bullets had struck in the window easing. Battle asked Alex Austin, his landlord, to call the police. This Austin would not do, but testified that he heard the men talking outside Battle's window. Battle for months has been the butt of jokers. Chief Hittson announced this afternoon that as a result of the Sunday night affair, anyone, no matter who, would be arrested and anyone, no matter who, would be arrested and fined under the public safety ordinance, if caught pestering the (black) man. Battle claims that the two men talking near the window saw him buy a ticket from a movie show, and that they mentioned this fact while talking. He had about $40 in his room. GEARY TO LECTURE ON FRUIT AUCTIONS Arthur M. Geary, a native son of Jackson County, will give a free illustrated lecture upon the fruit auction system of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Detroit and Buffalo in Medford, early in September. While taking the graduate course of law at Columbia University, Mr. Geary made a study of eastern markets. When the auctioneers of the large eastern cities met in New York last March to form the American Fruit and Produce Auction Association, they selected Mr. Geary to investigate the different auction markets and to come west and tell the fruit growers the results. The lecture will be illustrated by 100 slides showing market scenes in large eastern cities.
