COLLEGE FOOTBALL COMMENTARY Beavers have a defense this year, and that gives them hope Comment By Ken Goe The Oregonian MailTribune.com By Ken Goe The Oregonian Posted Sep. 7, 2014 @ 5:42 pm By Ken Goe The Oregonian Posted Sep. 7, 2014 @ 5:42 pm » Social News HONOLULU — College football isn’t like fishing. Sometimes an angler will throw back a netted fish. In college football, you never throw back a victory. The Beavers came very close to letting this slip through their fingers Saturday in Aloha Stadium, but Hawaii’s late fourth-quarter rally came up short and OSU walked away with a 38-30 victory. The Beavers played an ugly fourth quarter. Ugly finish or not, they left with a win. And for three quarters, their defense was dominant. The Beavers stuffed Hawaii and man-mountain running back Joey Iosefa, who bludgeoned Washington for 143 yards on 30 carries last week. They had Warriors quarterback Ikaika Woolsey off balance, indecisive and inaccurate. Woolsey will be seeing converted receiver Obum Gwacham, all 6 feet 5, 236 pounds of him, coming off the edge to swallow up one side of the field in his nightmares. Mannion, emerging deep threat Victor Bolden, running backs Storm Woods and Terron Ward, and the OSU offense went up and down the field for three quarters like they were scrimmaging the scout team. When the offense sputtered in the third quarter and the Beavers began playing giveaway with the football, the defense hung in there well enough to preserve the victory. Remember the 2013 Eastern Washington game? Mannion threw for 422 yards and three touchdowns, but the Beavers lost 49-46. Or how about Utah in Week 3? Mannion passed for 443 yards and five touchdowns. But OSU didn’t steal away from Salt Lake City with the victory until Mannion found Brandin Cooks for a six-yard score in overtime. The Beavers hung 44 points on Colorado, 52 on Washington State and 49 on Colorado. OK, that part of the schedule wasn’t murderers’ row. When the caliber of competition improved and the offense no longer was able to outscore people, the Beavers lost five in a row. Against USC and Washington, it became embarrassing. Now the Beavers have a defense to bring to the party. Hawaii’s only score for most of the game came on a four-play, six-yard drive following a Mannion interception. The Beavers snuffed another early Hawaii threat when defensive tackle Siale Hautau pounced on an Iosefa fumble. The Warriors made their late, fourth-quarter rally, aided by a pair of special teams turnovers. But Hawaii trailed 38-7 after three quarters. Realistically, the Warriors had a lot of ground to make up. The OSU defense ruled the field when it mattered. There still are 10 games to play, but already this season looks better than the rollercoaster ride that was 2013. The Beavers’ defensive line owned the line of scrimmage for most of the way Saturday night, the linebackers were mobile and disruptive and the secondary had Hawaii’s receivers locked away. OSU had enough depth to rotate the defensive linemen and the linebackers showed the wheels to chase down plays from behind. The Warriors went no-huddle. They mixed in some quarterback run plays – supposedly the sure way to exploit OSU’s defense – they tried to pound with Iosefa and for three quarters went ... nowhere. Hawaii coach Norm Chow, 68, an offensive mastermind for his entire career, was left with no answer other than to bicker with the officials. There is a danger from drawing too many conclusions from OSU’s victory. Nobody will confuse Hawaii with Michigan State. But the 2013 Utah team wasn’t a contender either. But Utah rolled up 539 yards on OSU defense. On Saturday, until a late blocked punt and a fumbled kickoff return, Hawaii couldn’t roll out of the driveway. Maybe in three weeks when Oregon State is at USC, if the Trojans bottle up the Mannion and Co. the way they did last year, Riley will have a defensive answer of his own. In the meantime, the Beavers are 2-0. They hung on to beat Hawaii on a warm, sticky night. And Riley isn’t about to throw it back.
