Spartans upend Mustangs Feb 24, 2014 12:00 AM A A The sixth time was a charm for the Southern Oregon Spartans hockey team on Sunday. The Spartans avoided a three-game sweep by the Ogden Mustangs with a 4-2 victory at The RRRink. Southern Oregon (12-27-2-2 Western States Hockey League) was 0-5 on the season against the Northwest Division's Mustangs (29-11-3). The Spartans broke a 2-all deadlock in the third period with a goal by Arturs Buss and sealed the win on Austin Sartorius' power play goal midway through the frame. The Mustangs struck first with a goal about two minutes into the second period. The Spartans' Tyler Spencer had a quick answer by scoring a game-tying goal 50 seconds later. Trevor Hillman also scored in the frame to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead before the Mustangs knotted it back up 2-all one minute into the third period.
