J.R. Robinson of Central Point had a narrow escape from death Saturday evening, when a southbound Southern Pacific train crashed into an auto he was driving at a grade crossing near that city. The machine was hurled ten feet in the air, and alighted bottom side up. Postmaster Ralph Woodford of this city, who witnessed the collision, appraises the present value of the machine at twenty-five cents. Robinson escaped without a scratch. Woodford and Horace Pelton passed in front of the train, and passed Robinson going in the opposite direction. Pelton shouted a warning to Robinson. Woodford looked behind him in time to see the machine in the air. The engine struck an auto in the rear. They stopped their machine and rushed to the wreckage in time to help the driver crawl from the wrecked car. There are three grade crossings in the three miles of the Central Point-Tolo section of the Pacific highway on the route adopted by the county commissioners. HILLIS SPEAKS ON AMERICA OF TODAY AT CHAUTAUQUA ASHLAND, July 12 — Although Chautauqua lost one Darling, Ashland gained another in the person of Mrs. Della Crowan Miller, interpreter of drama, musical programs and lecture recitals, who is a member of the faculty of the present assembly. The occasion was the noonday luncheon which had been planned at the Hotel Oregon on Saturday, complimentary to Nelson Darling, who was to have met 100 of Ashland's leading citizens around the banquet board, preliminary to his popular address on "Our Town" in the afternoon. Everybody was on the alert fro the reputation of the Oklahoman as a booster had preceded, and the implication it was taken for granted that his topic would prove hot stuff. But he failed to arrive, and he wired that he could be here on Sunday, an arrangement that was unacceptable to the management. Consequently, his engagement was cancelled forthwith. Opportunity Newell Dwight Hillis loomed on the horizon, also belated, having arrived Saturday instead of Friday. What better arrangement could be devised than to have Dr. Hillis fill the vacant place, a suggestion which the genial speaker generously responded to.
