Haunted houses and farm fests fill the weekend Special lighting effects make ghouls seem even scarier at Randall Theatre's Nightmare Chamber Haunted House. Mail Tribune / Jamie Lusch Thursday Oct 27, 2016 at 4:00 PM An elaborate haunted house with an asylum theme fills Randall Theatre Company's 10,000-square-foot warehouse at 10 Third St., Medford. Horror fans can pass through a twisting labyrinth of terror created by theatrical professionals with carefully designed sets, lighting, pneumatic devices, electronics, props and live actors in a professional-grade haunted house. “We're a theater company," says Randall Theatre Artistic Director Robin Downward. "This is what we do throughout the year. The haunt is an opportunity for us to really go big and create a world that is truly terrifying, but also fun and safe.” The annual haunt is open from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday through Monday, Oct. 28-31. The haunt is again sponsored this year by Magic Man Costume and Fun Shops in Medford and Grants Pass. General admission is $10 and can be purchased online at randalltheatre.com or by calling 541-632-3258. Discounted general admission tickets for $8 and Flex Passes for $15 can be purchased at Magic Man shops in Medford's Bear Creek Plaza, 880 Biddle Road in Medford and in Grants Pass at 1448 Williams Highway. Randall Theatre's Flex Pass allows patrons to skip the long lines and cut their wait time. Now in its seventh year, Randall Theatre's haunts are an October fixture for horror fans. This year's theme features Dr. Rutherford Maximilian III. Diagnosed insane after he was discovered experimenting on live patients at his Mysterium Paranormal University, he is locked in the asylum he founded. His psychic abilities are too powerful, however, and he is able to escape by controlling the minds of the guards. Pheasant Fields Farm: A harvest festival is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29-30, at the 20-acre farm, 1865 Camp Baker Road, Phoenix. Look for a corn maze, hay rides, face painting, pear shooting gallery, animal display, a cow train and country store with organic produce, handcrafted items, bread, caramel apples, espresso drinks and meal choices. Seven Oaks Farm: There will be pony rides, hay rides, cookie and pumpkin decorating, face painting, visits with friendly goats and a maze from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28-29, at the farm, 5504 Rogue Valley Highway, Central Point. Call 541-664-2060. Puppeteers for Fears: An R-rated puppet show titled "The Call of Cthulhu" — based on horror icon H.P. Lovecraft's short story about a malevolent, octopus-faced god who slumbers beneath the sea and communicates with humans through their dreams, slowly driving them mad — will show at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, at Oberon's Tavern, 45 N. Main St., Ashland. A matinee is set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30. Tickets are $8. Call 541-708-6652 for information. The show then moves to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Randall Theatre, 10 E. Third St., Medford. Advance tickets are $10. Call 541-632-3258. Performances will feature puppets, a full rock band and multimedia backdrops. With songs and script by Josh Gross, it will be directed by Beth Boulay and stars Boulay, Austin Comfort, Eric Solis, Alyssa Matthews and Stephen Connolly. Just Scream Haunted House: A haunted house full of zombies, ghouls and goblins will be open from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, at 202 N. Central Ave., Medford. Children under age 7 will not be admitted. Kids 7-12 must be accompanied by an adult. Childcare is available. Admission is $5 and benefits the Southern Oregon Humane Society. Gold Hill Halloween Haunted House and Graveyard: A two-story, family-friendly haunted house that is more than 100 years old is the setting for ghoulish good fun and treats for all ages from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, and Monday, Oct. 31, at 504 First Ave., Gold Hill. Tickets are $5 for age 13 and older, $3 for age 6-12, $1 for age 3-5 and free for age 2 and younger. Call 541-855-1182. Halloween Masquerade Ball: The Greater Medford Rotary Club will host its annual masquerade ball from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Belle Fiore Winery, 100 Belle Fiore Lane (off Dead Indian Memorial Road), Ashland. The festivities will include a buffet-style dinner with dessert, wine, beer, a photo booth, a costume contest with prizes and dancing from 8 to 11 p.m. to live music by Fat Sexy. A one-mile fun run/walk is at 10:30 a.m., followed by 5K and 10K races at 11:15 a.m. Top male and female winners receive cash prizes. Age group winners receive gift card prizes, and all youths receive finishers' medals. All races are chip timed, and costumes are encouraged. Puss 'n Boots Ball: The 25th Annual Puss 'n Boots Costume Ball and Auction is from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St., Ashland. The event includes dinner and dessert and dancing to live music by The Rogue Suspects. Additional activities include Halloween costume contests, silent and live auctions and a "Dog Paddle" bidding event to make donations. The event benefits Friends of the Animal Shelter. Dracula's Playlist: The Rogue Valley Symphonic Band presents "Dracula's Playlist" at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, in the Music Recital Hall, 405 S. Mountain Ave., on the Southern Oregon University campus, Ashland. Music director Dan Kocurek will lead the ensemble in a spine-chilling array of concert pieces perfectly suited to the spirit of Halloween. Music includes "Night on Bald Mountain," "Come Sweet Death," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," "Death and Transfiguration," a "Nightmare Before Christmas" and selections from "Carmina Burana." Tickets are $12, $10 for seniors, $8 for students, or $20 for a family of four with $1 per additional child. Those in costumes receive $1 off.
