The workshop will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ashpole Community Center, next to City Hall at 17 Buchanan Ave., Eagle Point. Participants will discuss specific properties as well as downtown issues such as parking and pedestrian and vehicle access to the downtown. Vacated and used for storage since it was replaced with a newer station in recent years, the old fire station is virtually a blank canvas, says City Planner Mike Upston. "The city wants to be good neighbors and, as property owners inside its own downtown, we want to discuss the best possible ways to develop city-owned property for the betterment of the downtown," Upston said. "A number of properties in the downtown are either vacant or woefully under-utilized and, as landowners, we want to be thinking ahead as to what could be on our property." City officials and a local architect will provide background on downtown planning and possible future development of the city-owned property along Main Street, across the street from Bob Moore Park. Upston said city officials will ask for feedback on ways to provide for safe and efficient vehicle and pedestrian access, as well as parking for the future tenants, their customers and the public. Upston said the downtown could use additional housing and "businesses and attractions to draw people from outside the community at a level that will allow downtown businesses to succeed and grow."
