The Raiders (8-3, 6-1 Cascade) defeated the Cavaliers (5-9, 5-3 Cascade) for the first time at home since 1999 and remained atop the league standings as a result of a dominating offensive effort led by senior All-American Kristina Matchett and junior transfer Kristin Ferris. Matchett led all players with 14 kills in 27 swings, while Ferris went 11-for-25 with only one miscue for a .400 attack percentage. "I’m very pleased with the way we bounced back from a tough loss," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "We came out with a lot of energy and spirit." Southern Oregon, which scored 10 of the first 12 points en route to winning Game 1, was seriously threatened only once during the rare afternoon match. Concordia raced to 9-5 and 14-11 leads in Game 2, but three Matchett kills fueled an 8-1 Raider run, and another 8-1 skein closed out the frame. Advertisement As a team, SOU converted 50 of 106 attack attempts for a .311 efficiency while limiting Concordia 60 points below its season average at a .121 clip. Raider setter Jamie McCreary accumulated a match-high 36 assists, and junior defender Kelly Thoni uncorked a season-high four service aces. Women’s Soccer SOU 1, WESTERN BAPTIST 0, 2 OTs — At Ashland, Southern Oregon ended four seasons and 11 games of futility against its Cascade Conference rival at University Field. Sophomore forward Katie Emerson scored the game-winner 5½ minutes into the second 10-minute overtime session. Emerson broke free from the WBC defensive line, took a long lead pass from junior midfielder Marissa Gillingham, dribbled twice and beat diving Warrior goalkeeper Kim Mendenhall to the right from just inside the box. The victory allowed the Raiders (5-5, 4-1 Cascade) to set a program record for consecutive wins (four) while halting a Warrior (8-4-1, 6-1 Cascade) six-game win skein. The triumph also avenged a 1-nil loss to the Salem school on Sept. 13. SOU goalkeeper Patti McCoy pushed away WBC’s best scoring chance — a 15-yard laser by All-American forward KeriAnn Rumrey in the 88th minute — and finished with a season-high 14 saves. Cross Country SOU MEN, WOMEN SECOND — At Forest Grove, Southern Oregon’s men’s and women’s teams each came in second, and former Phoenix High standout Nathan May continued to impress by winning the men’s race in the Pacific University Invitational. The Raider men scored 54 points and got a fourth-place finish from Ryan Pfeil, who clocked 26 minutes, 52.11 seconds over the 8-kilometer course at Lincoln Park. Whitworth won with 30 points. May, a Pacific freshman, came in in 26:25.81, outdistancing runner-up Michael Chuol of Whitworth (26:33.05). May pulled away in the last mile for his first collegiate win after second- and fourth-place finishes in his first two races. For the SOU women, who tallied 48 points to also finish behind Whitworth (30), Brynn Cogdill came in third in the 6K race in 23:37.73.
