I know that the signs that are white with black numbers or letters are obey-or-else signs, but there are a variety of colors on other highway signs. Do the colors always mean the same thing and what are the different colors? — B.D., Medford It's not really accurate to say the colors mean the same thing, but sign colors do give drivers a clue as to what sort of information to expect. To determine what that information is, we went to the source, the Oregon Driver Manual. And lo and behold, there are several pages that answer your very question. Beginning on Page 15, the manual gives the following guides for sign colors: Red: Prohibitive, as in Stop, Do Not Enter or No Left turn. These are mandatory requirements. White: Regulatory, which as you suggested, B.D., establish requirements that drivers must obey to stay within the letter of the law. The regulatory category includes speed limits and signs with directions such as Do Not Pass and No Left Turn. Gold: Warning, such as for a pedestrian crossing, a recommended speed entering a curve and the advised speed for off-ramps from freeways. These are not "obey-or-else" signs, but are intended to put drivers on alert and almost certainly could be used against a driver should an accident occur. Orange: Road work zones, indicating workers ahead in or near the traffic lanes. Yellow: School speed zone or school crossing. The school speed sign is attached to a white speed limit sign, indicating the speed limit is mandatory. Green: Guidance or informational, such as arrow signs on a freeway indicating a turnoff to a city and/or highway. Brown: Historical or cultural sites, including scenic areas, parks and historical markers. Blue: Motorist service, indicating such things as food, gas, lodging and rest areas. Travel safely, B.D.
