Five innings later, the South Medford softball pitcher had overcome an ill spell and pinned the first Southern Oregon Conference loss on league-leading Roseburg. South won the doubleheader opener, 1-0 in 10 innings, then lost the second game, 4-3. The Panthers (12-7, 7-5 SOC) are in third place. Roseburg dropped to 17-4 and 11-1. Mendenhall had flu-like symptoms and, in the fifth inning, went to her knees with dizziness and a stomachache. After getting fluids during a visit by the trainer, she resumed pitching. Advertisement "She went the full 10 and did a great job," said South coach Dan Marshall. "Even though she was feeling bad, she toughed it out and got through it. It was a big win." Jonni Byrne ignited the winning rally with a leadoff single, then moved to second on Mendenhall’s sacrifice bunt. Marissa Towry singled to get her to third, and Michelle Trautman delivered the game-winning hit. "It was hit hard," said Marshall. "It wasn’t a bleeder or a slap. It was a line drive in the hole." Mendenhall, who allowed five hits and fanned six, set the Indians down in order in the bottom of the inning. Jackie Chaplin and Towry each had two hits for South, as did Brandi Campos and Ashley Roy for Roseburg. Roseburg had runners in scoring position in the second, seventh and eighth innings. "We just couldn’t get a hit when we needed it," said coach Tony Campos, adding that his players were "pretty disappointed" over their first league loss. "They were very, very up for this game," he said, "then they kind of had the air taken out of them. It took a little while to get back up." In Game 2, South rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie it at 3-3, but Roseburg came up with a run in the bottom of the seventh to decide the contest. The Indians’ Ali Paz reached on a fielder’s choice and came around to score on a Roy single. The Panthers’ sixth-inning uprising was built on four straight singles by Alex Jordahl, Chaplin, Simone Hubbard and Byrne. Towry plated another run with a sacrifice fly. "Even though you want the sweep," said Marshall, "at this point, we needed to solidify a spot in the playoffs. We’re still not there, but this moves us closer." Chaplin was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, while Campos, Roy and Brittany Gates had two hits for Roseburg.
