PREP VOLLEYBALL Indians top La Grande, head to tourney LA GRANDE -- The unheralded Roseburg High volleyball team continued it's state playoff run Wednesday with a 15-12, 15-11 win over La Grande. The Indians now advance to the Class 4A state tournament, where they'll meet Mount Hood League champion and No. 2-ranked Central Catholic on Friday at the University of Portland's Chiles Center. The Indians didn't seem to be fazed by the long bus trek to eastern Oregon as they jumped out to an early 6-0 first-game lead. La Grande rallied back and knotted the score at 11 before Roseburg put the Tigers away. "The key to our success tonight was serving," Roseburg coach Bruce Myers said. "We only missed two as a team tonight compared to the 19 misses we had against Marshfield." Randi Slone continued her consistency at the service line. When Slone served, the Indians scored 12 points and she also recorded a team-high six aces. Roseburg had similar early success in Game 2, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Unlike the first game, however, the Tigers couldn't mount any sort of comeback, allowing the Indians to close out the match. Megan Morley finished with 11 kills while Stephanie Nickalson had 15 digs to lead Roseburg. "This is icing on the cake," Myers said. "We finished third in our conference with five losses so it's great to be still playing volleyball this time of the year." REYNOLDS 5-15-15, KLAMATH UNION 15-12-9 -- At Klamath Falls, despite 18 kills from Kaylene Munson and 17 from Kristina Matchett, the Klamath Union volleyball team watched its season come to a close. The Pelicans looked impressive in the first game but Reynolds weathered the storm to take the final two. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, OR U.S.A.
