The mystery of the ages I don’t get it. Well, that’s a phrase I use often since moving to Ashland nine months ago, but I really don’t understand why gas prices are so high in this valley. Can you explain why a tiny town, like Myrtle Point, or even a large city, like Portland, both have prices significantly lower than our area? — D.D. Bents, Ashland As Winston Churchill once said about our valley’s gas prices, it’s "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." OK, so he really said that about the Soviet Union. But it applies here, and we’d add "smothered in a nacho cheese sauce" these days. It’s a puzzler, that’s for sure, D.D., and it’s a question that keeps the gentle folk at Since You Asked Headquarters prepared to inhale fumes from a tailpipe. So far, the experts keep telling us that our humble little burg is one of the farthest from the end of a gasoline pipeline in Eugene. When we point out that gas prices used to be cheaper here compared to other places in the state, they tell us that market conditions have probably changed. Back when they were cheaper here, they said it was because of Costco’s affect on the local market. Must’ve worn off. Even at the coast in Bandon prices are slightly lower than ours now, according to one of our SYA jet-setters who likes to scamper about the state. So if market conditions come to bear, shouldn’t we be cheaper than the coast? If you’re still confused, D.D., please stay away from those fumes. It’s too expensive.
