The crash, at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday on South Pacific Highway, sent five people, including Phoenix police officer Aaron Hull and a Southern Oregon University criminology student ride-along to area hospitals with minor injuries, Oregon State Police said in a news release. Hull was driving north on South Pacific Highway with his 2006 Ford patrol car's emergency lights and siren on as he attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, the OSP news release said. A 1994 Mazda four-door driven by June Heinze, 78, of Eagle Point, attempted to cross the highway into a private drive in front of the patrol car. The police car crashed into the right front side of the Mazda, OSP reported. Hull, 27, and his passenger, Norma J. Fay, 25, of Grants Pass, were transported to Providence Medford Medical Center, OSP said. Heinze and her two passengers, Stacia Baldwin, 28, of Henderson, Nev., and Paul Addington, 24, no address listed, also were taken to Providence. All were treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. Oregon State Police, Phoenix police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene of the crash. The investigation is ongoing. OSP is awaiting crash reconstruction details, including information on the vehicles' speeds, OSP Lt. Brian Powers said. Meanwhile, Phoenix police will patrol the streets with just a single marked car. An audit last spring determined that the department had too many aged vehicles that weren't serviceable and recommended that it replace the old cars with newer models. Phoenix Police Chief Kurt Barthel said two new vehicles have been ordered and are expected to arrive in about a month. Until then, he plans to have patrol officers use his unmarked chief's car.
