Merlin teen dies while handling gun on New Year's Eve Monday Jan 2, 2017 at 2:45 PM Jan 2, 2017 at 2:45 PM A 16-year-old died New Year's Eve after shooting himself while handling a firearm with friends while his parents were out of town, Oregon State Police said. The shooting occurred at about 8:30 p.m. at the victim's home on Robertson Bridge Road near Merlin, OSP said in a media release. Their preliminary investigation found the 16-year-old had several friends over while his parents were out of town and accidentally shot himself while handling a firearm. His friends called 911 and began resuscitation efforts but he died before emergency responders arrived, the release said. The victim's name has not been released. Police said they want to talk to several of the victim's friends who are believed to have left the home before emergency crews arrived. Those with information or who were at the residence are asked to call OSP at 541-776-6111.
