Mustangs split double dip with Nuts The Medford Mustangs were in danger of dropping their fifth game in seven outings to open the American Legion baseball season, but a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game salvaged a doubleheader split against the Chico Nuts Monday at Miles Field. The Mustangs (3-4) lost the opener to the California squad 7-3, then posted a 9-8 victory in the nightcap. The Mustangs trailed Chico 8-6 entering the seventh inning of Game 2. Nuts� reliever Ryan Leichter retired the first batter he faced, before Matt Skundrick drew his third walk of the game. Andy Bartels followed by walking on a 3-2 pitch and Charlie Jensen singled to load the bases. Chuck Shine�s high grounder over the Chico third baseman scored Skundrick and Bartels to tie the game. Jensen and Shine advanced to second and third when the throw to the plate got past the Chico catcher. Phil Ouellette walked to load the bases, then Ken Halpin legged out a fielder�s choice to score the winning run. Bartels had one hit � a 2-run homer in the second inning � for Medford, but scored twice and had three RBIs. Halpin added two hits and two RBIs. In the first game, four Medford errors in the fifth inning led to five Chico runs. Skundrick went 3-for-3, while Colby Gonzales added two hits and two RBIs.
