William Heyenbruch of Auburn fell on his way down the mountain after summiting earlier, according to Nick Meyers, Mt. Shasta's lead climbing ranger. The accident occurred about 9 p.m. Sunday, July 3, near Clear Creek Trail, about 10,000 feet up the mountain, Meyers said. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection received a report about the fall at 11:36 p.m. The fall happened on a steep slope with snow at the top and bare rocks at the bottom. Meyers said Heyenbruch was descending when he slipped and slid rapidly for about 100 to 150 feet before striking the rocks. Heyenbruch was with his son and another climber when he fell. "As things start to melt, you can have snow patches that terminate into rocks. A seemingly small slope can have high consequences," Meyers said. Heyenbruch died on the mountain at about 3 a.m. Monday, July 4, according to a news release from the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office. "He had quite a bit of experience. He was not a novice by any means," Meyers said. “He had summited Shasta many times." Rescue climbers from CAL FIRE and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the scene, along with Siskiyou County sheriff's deputies and a California Highway Patrol helicopter crew.
