Douglas Warner, of Mendocino, Calif., will join Livia Genise as co-director of Camelot Theatre, Genise is expected to announce tonight. Warner, former executive director of the Mendocino Theatre Company in California, is expected to join the Talent-based theater June 1. "In his 35 years of involvement with live performance, theater and over 80 plays, Doug has truly done it all," Camelot’s Ted Gibbs said. "Acting, directing, managing, producing, sound/set design and construction, box office management, volunteer coordination, revenue development, marketing, public relations, song and play-writing." Gibbs said the division of responsibility between Genise and Warner has not been hammered out yet, but Genise said she will probably continue as the group’s artistic director, while Warner would become associate artistic director and managing director. Advertisement Artistic directors typically choose the plays a theater will present and are responsible for artistic production. Managing directors are typically responsible for business plans and operations. Genise said she’s wanted to bring a managing director on board for a year or more but kept putting the matter on the back burner. She said she was not acquainted with Warner before now, but that he and his wife visited the Rogue Valley to attend plays for years. When Warner’s wife, Arlene, was hired as a graphic designer at Bear Creek Corp., Warner approached Camelot. "As soon as I saw his resume I brought it to Ted (board member Gibbs), and we took it to the board and arranged to meet with him," Genise says. "He said, ‘Let me look at your profit-and-loss statement, and I’ll tell you what you can afford to pay me. Then you’ll see after a year if I’ve brought in more money.’ "He came in with a complete business plan and knocked the board off its feet." Camelot, like many small theaters, has a history of scrambling for the money to keep its doors open. Genise says having somebody to run the business end of the nonprofit theater should free her to pursue such long-held goals as the development of the Camelot Theatre Conservatory as the group’s educational arm. "It frees me up," she said. "I tried before and couldn’t do it." In addition to his theater background, Warner is a professional rhythm-and-blues singer and musician (acoustic/electric/bass guitar, harmonica, drums, piano) with 25 years of experience.
