Sentinel Posted Mar. 11, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Jeff Gordon and NASCAR talked safety on Tuesday. This was a good thing. But you have to wonder why a conversation was necessary in the first place. The sport is driven — literally, of course — by the 42 guys and one gal who suit up every weekend to go at crazy speeds. So why not do everything possible to make them safe? That would include providing protective SAFER barriers at every inch of every track unless there are some mitigating circumstances, like a piece of the track where the odds of a driver clipping it are microscopically low. Otherwise, cover it up. “I know they are doing a lot to put as much effort into answering the question: What can we do right away?” Gordon said last week before the race in Las Vegas. “… But there is only so much that can be done in a short period of time. That is what I want to see.” NASCAR officials have been trying to play catch-up in reacting to safety concerns since the start of the season when Kyle Busch’s car hit an unprotected wall in an Xfinity race the day before the Daytona 500. He missed the biggest race of the year with a compound fracture in his left leg and a broken right foot. A week later, Gordon slammed into an unprotected wall at Atlanta. Changes to specific tracks are being made incrementally, including Daytona. Track president Joie Chitwood III vowed that they would “install SAFER barrier on every inch at this property,” presumably in time for the July race. “The one thing that I would question is when did SAFER barriers start being put at race tracks and what was the plan for them to be complete and where are we in that plan,” Gordon said. “I was under the impression when they started going in it was going to be a three- or four-year plan to complete the SAFER barriers in every wall that needed to have a SAFER barrier. I don’t think anybody expected them to have SAFER barriers around every wall by Day 1. I think I’m realistic to know that they can’t just have it next week. “It takes a while to manufacturer them. There are only a couple of groups or distributors, or however you want to put it. My question is: What is the time frame to have those built and installed? I think everybody knows it’s a priority, but it seems to be kind of pushed further along since Kyle’s accident. Where were we prior to Kyle’s accident on that plan?” NASCAR also met with Ryan Newman last week to examine safety protocols and possible improvements. “It’s really just getting on the same page in terms of what’s planned from a safety standpoint at each of the tracks coming up,” said NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O’Donnell.
