It appears that motorists are very lax in obeying the rules there anyway. When many of these drivers try to beat the next car, speeding through the circle, their eyes are peeled on the other drivers. Until, that is, they enter the section with the crosswalk. There is very poor visibility at these crosswalks and when the driver is ready to exit the rotary, the pedestrians are in for a big surprise. I have seen this happening several times already. Either the pedestrian scrambles to get out of the way of the turning car or freezes in the middle of the crosswalk. It seems like a dangerous place to put a crosswalk and an accident just waiting to happen. My advice to all of us drivers out there would be to be extra cautious when using this rotary. Cathy La Prova Medford The miracle of warming A recent article in the journal Nature says global warming has averted the next ice age by 50,000 to 100,000 years. The last ice age was 12,000 years ago, and based on the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, we were supposed to enter another ice age about 100 years ago. It could be serendipity or a gift from God. I realize it’s PC correct to hypothesize on the disaster of a warmer planet, but let’s think about the benefits. Many more people die from cold spells than warm. More water will evaporate from the oceans, creating more fresh water. More fresh water creates more plants which creates more animals. If people have to move from the coastal cities over the next 100 years, it’s not a big deal. If it gets warm enough we could actually use Canada and Siberia, very large land areas. Don’t try to use legislation as a substitute for technological advancements. The transition from fossil fuel to solar will happen on its own. If people in Chicago have a choice between summers (and winters) a little warmer or a mile thick sheet of ice, I know what their choice will be. Larry Fields Medford Occupiers are a joke Concerning the armed persons at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, it is hard to take anyone seriously who sits in a chair covered by a tarp holding a gun or who dresses up as a continental army officer. These people are a joke. They act like little kids throwing a temper tantrum. No offense meant to little kids. Donald Riegger Medford How dare they? Just some ramblings regarding the Harney County situation at the wildlife refuge. How dare those militant thugs take over a beautiful, well-cared-for sanctuary that belongs to all of us and is being managed to preserve the area for wildlife, history and the pleasure of the people for generations to come? No one seems to want them there. They are trespassing and now damaging property. They are stealing services. They are disrupting the tranquility of the local population. And they aren't even part of the great state of Oregon! Go home, cowboys! Go mend your own fences! And for "the powers that be," a question: What if these guys had black skin instead of white or if they wore turbans instead of cowboy hats? What would be happening to make them accountable for their takeover of a government facility? I'll be glad when this is over!
