News briefs: Friday seminars will teach seniors safe medication use Two Friday seminars will show seniors how to use their medications safely and effectively. The programs will introduce seven drug consumer safety rules and highlight information that patients should have about the prescription, over-the-counter and herbal medications they take. Body changes that accompany aging and how these changes affect the way that drugs work in the body also will be discussed. Sponsored by Senior and Disability Services of Rogue Valley Council of Governments and the Oregon State Council of Senior Citizens, the seminars are free and open to the public. The first session will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Riverside Conference Center's Chinook Room, 971 E. Sixth St., Grants Pass. The second will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Jackson County Public Works auditorium, 200 Antelope Road, White City. Discussion of transgender issues Thursday at The Grove Not Straight Not Sure is sponsoring an open discussion on transgender and intersex issues from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at The Grove Family Resource Center conference room, 1195 E. Main St., Ashland. There will be a guest speaker, and people of any age, gender or sexual orientation can attend and participate in conversation. The event is free. Not Straight Not Sure is a youth-directed resource for youth and young adults living with diverse sexualities and gender identities in Southern Oregon and Northern California, said spokeswoman Delaine Due. Women's center will show films on reproductive choice The Women's Resource Center at Southern Oregon University will show two films Tuesday that focus on reproductive freedom. "Choice Thoughts" and "The Fragile Promise of Choice" will be shown at 7 p.m. in the SOU Stevenson Union Redford Lounge. "Choice Thoughts" features an overview of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger's work. The Emmy award-winning "The Fragile Promise of Choice" shows how abortion availability can be affected and presents activists' and clinicians' efforts to preserve legal abortion services. The SOU Women's Resource Center offers "Women's History Every Month" films on the third Tuesday each month, except in December and March. Collection of paintings by Gabriel Lipper now on display ASHLAND - A collection of classically styled paintings by artist Gabriel Lipper are on display now through Oct. 29 at the Aalto Gallery. Lipper, best locally known for his large-scale public murals, spent several months traveling through Europe and documenting what he saw. Displayed works focus on Venice and the Mediterranean.
