Sturgell places for Raiders in tourney PRIMM, Nev. � Dan Sturgell of Southern Oregon University placed eighth in the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday. Sturgell, ranked No. 3 in NAIA at 184 pounds, defeated NAIA second-ranked Tyson Thivierge of Montana State Northern Saturday at the Star of Desert Arena near Las Vegas. Sturgell lost his next two matches. "We�ve been going to this tournament for about 13 years and this is only our third placer," Southern Oregon coach Mike Ritchey said. "It�s a pretty big accomplishment for us. It will also be a key at the nationals for seeding." Among the teams are top-level Division I programs. The last Southern Oregon placer was Nick Cline, who placed fifth at 142 in 1997. Raider heavyweight Devin Cole was beaten in overtime by Brad Steele of Wyoming, losing his chance to place. The Raiders� eight wrestlers in the tournament accumulated a respectable 22 team points. "It�s one of our higher point totals," said Ritchey. "Over the course of the tournament, seven of our eight wrestlers won at least one match and scored points. Overall, our performance was pretty good for this point in the season." Men�s Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 70, OCCIDENTAL 63 � At Santa Cruz, Calif., James Wightman connected on 6-of-7 3-point shots to lead Southern Oregon to a win at the UC Santa Cruz Invitational. The Raiders take on UC Santa Cruz today at 3 p.m. Southern Oregon improved to 3-3 on the season and have won three straight. Women�s Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 69, PACIFIC UNION 51 � At Angwin, Calif., Southern Oregon (3-7) turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and pulled away in its first ever game against Pacific Union. The Raiders led 32-29 at halftime. Southern Oregon was led by sophomore forward Jaime Stanford with 14 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Tiwana Merritt added 14 points and five assists.
