SOU women top Humboldt State ARCATA, Calif. - Jaime Stanford and Sara Marks each scored 17 points to lead the Southern Oregon University women's basketball team to a 78-67 win over Humboldt State at the Humboldt Classic on Friday. The Raiders (2-1) play Western Oregon today at 5 p.m. in the three-team tournament finale. SOU's win over Humboldt was its second victory over a Division II school this season. Three other Raiders scored in double figures with Kara Magee-Arick notching 13 and Lindsey Hilaire and Kelley Dexter each adding 10. SOU let a 45-32 halftime lead slip away when Humboldt came back to tie the game at 58-58 with 12 minutes remaining. But the Raiders once again pulled away to send Humboldt to its second loss in three games. The two teams combined for 65 turnovers, 49 fouls and 60 free throw attempts. Dexter also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and dished out five assists. Jackie Kolesar led Humboldt with 17 points before fouling out and Peni Vaefaga added 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Men's Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 75, UC SANTA CRUZ 69 - At Ashland, senior forward Matt Zosel scored 21 of his career-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Southern Oregon men's basketball team to a come-from-behind victory. The Raiders overcame chilly shooting and an eight-point second-half deficit to improve to 3-0 on the season, the school's best start since 1987-88. After missing two of three shots in the opening half and with SOU trailing 39-31 three minutes into the second half, Zosel began his onslaught with six consecutive points, and he accounted for 12 points in a game-winning 18-8 Raider run that erased a 56-53 deficit with nine minutes to go. Raider junior forward Martin DeGroot helped SOU win the rebounding battle 38-37 with a game-high 10, while senior Hamilton Barnes and junior Brandon Knudsen each came off the bench for nine points. The Banana Slugs, who led 28-27 at the break, received a 20-point performance from junior guard Jimmy Darr. Junior forward Nicholas Echevestre tallied 14, while senior Paul Williams had 12. Fueled by a 25-point explosion from All-American forward LaMont Swinson, fourth-ranked Oregon Tech downed Willamette 93-73 in Game 1 of the two-day tournament. SOU and OIT swap opponents at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. today with the Raiders playing the late game.
