Radio stations urge participation in river cleanup By WENDY SIPOREN Five local radio stations are teaming up to get people off their couches and send them "Down by the Riverside" as a part of a state and nationwide effort to clean and enhance waterways on Saturday, May 22. "Hey, this is your river. We're going to be in your back yard," said KZZE promotions director Jenifer Wilde, who is coordinating the effort at four sites on the Rogue River with the Oregon State Parks Department and affiliated stations KRWQ, KMED, KKJJ and KOOL. The stations are enticing participants with the possibility of winning one of two river rafting trips with Siskiyou Adventures for whoever finds the most unusual object and the largest ball of fishing line. The prizes will be awarded at the Osprey Brew Pub in Medford the same day. Several other cleanup sites on local waterways are being coordinated by SOLV, previously known as Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism. The 30-year-old organization coordinates an annual state beach cleanup and an adopt-a-river maintenance program. Oregon's first river cleanup day in 1996 was prompted by flooding in the north part of the state. Now efforts are focused on enhancing public access and restoring rivers. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes, preferably boots, and bring gloves if possible.
