Eleanor Holbrook, a parks commission volunteer, will lead the second annual Central Point Citywide Litter Pick-Up at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Holbrook expects the event to surpass last year’s turnout of 300 by at least another 100 hard-working souls. "We’re expecting quite a few more," said Holbrook. "Out of 12,000 people, we ought to be able to get 400." Advertisement Holbrook chaired the event last year with co-commissioner Marlene Watson. She jokes that she "kept notes" so this year’s coordinator would know how to run things. But no one stepped forward. When resident Cheryl Cummings offered to co-chair if she stayed, Holbrook decided to continue the cause. "At first I said no," said Holbrook, 73. "I did it last year and someone would step up this year. But this is important to me and I’d like to see it continue. "This year I’d like to see the event focused just as much on the anti-littering — to remind folks, don’t throw it out the window because someone has to pick it up." The event will begin with registration at the old red fire station (on Third Street near Pine Street). Volunteers who are registered by 10 a.m. will receive an event T-shirt (donated by LTM Inc.), a ticket to redeem for lunch and a hefty supply of heavy-duty trash bags courtesy of Ray’s Food Place. Hot dogs and pizza will be donated by Circle K, Little Caesar’s and Abby’s, and members of the Senior Center will help serve. After lunch, drawings will be held for more than 50 raffle prizes donated by local businesses, ranging from free meals to manicures. Holbrook said the nearby U.S. Army recruiting station had offered a dozen new recruits to help clean up, and fifth-grade classes — students joined in the effort last year — are expected to be back with their teachers and parents. Cummings said she hopes the event fosters a sense of community and pride that continues for years. "This is just another thing to make us feel like we’re still a small close-knit community, even though we are growing," said Cummings. "To lose that sense of community and for people not to care anymore, Central Point would be a totally different place." For more information on the event, call Parks and Recreation at 664-3321.
