Students will rally against violence ASHLAND -- A coalition of student groups from Southern Oregon University will rally against violence at 8 p.m. today on the lawn in front of Churchill Hall. Members of STOP -- Students Together Outright Pissed -- say they are taking action to regain a sense of safety and peace on campus after two recent assaults in Ashland. The rally will focus on educating students on ways to stay safe and on safety resources available on campus. "We're doing it at night to show that you can be out at night as long as you do it safely," said campaign organizer Ryan Wines. The rally will feature brief speeches from campus and community members, followed by an open microphone for people to speak out on the subject. Part of a week's worth of safety awareness and education programs, the rally is sponsored by the Associated Students, the Women's Resource Center, the Lesbian Bisexual Gay Transgender Association and REACT, a student anti-violence educational group. "We need to have that kind of education and awareness going on everyday," said Wines. "We need to be more proactive ... we're going to try to educate our students so it won't happen again."
