Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 26, 2006 Raiders drop to third place with softball split Raider Roundup ASHLAND — The Corban College softball team soothed a frustrating start to the 2006 season with a come-from-behind, 4-3 upset of 23rd-ranked Southern Oregon University Saturday. The defending Cascade Conference champion Raiders salvaged a doubleheader split by taking Game 2, 7-3. The Raiders (12-9, 2-2 Cascade), who squandered 1-0 and 3-2 leads in Game 1, fell to third place in the six-team standings following the opening weekend of league action. After struggling to a 2-10 season start, senior pitcher Rachel Hiatt and sophomore outfielder Laura Santie helped the Warriors (3-11, 1-3) snap a three-game slide and register the school’s first-ever win at University Field. Santie smacked a two-run homer off SOU ace Julianne Cree in the fourth, and Hiatt tossed a seven-hitter, drove in the game-tying run in the two-run sixth inning with a line drive single and retired the final six Raider batters for her third win of the year. A hit batsman and a Cree fielding error set the table for Hiatt’s key hit as well as the game-winning sacrifice fly by Becca Shelamer in the sixth-inning Warrior rally. Advertisement Corban, which had lost six straight and 10 of the previous 12 encounters with Southern Oregon entering the day, then scored three first-inning runs on four hits against Raider freshman hurler Cat Cousins to start Game 2. But the Raiders erupted for six runs in the first two frames against Warrior freshman Erin Sailors. Senior shortstop Megan Rock, who raised her season batting average 64 points to .260 with a 4-for-4 day, delivered a two-out, two-run single in the first, and senior Tanisha Burch had a two-run double in the second to highlight the Raider offense. After the shaky start, Cousins retired 13 straight and 17 of the last 19 Warrior batters for her third collegiate victory. She allowed five hits and fanned three. Freshman outfielder Deni Rowley and sophomore designated player Allesha Spradling each went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader and scored twice. Hiatt also was 3-for-6 and drove in two for Corban, while North Medford High graduate Megan Lamson scored a pair of runs in Game 1. Southern Oregon plays its next 10 games on the road starting next Friday at Eastern Oregon. Track & Field HORNET INVITATIONAL — At Sacramento, Calif., Southern Oregon had three competitors meet national NAIA qualifying standards at the Cal State-Sacramento Hornet Invitational. Sophomore Kevin Jeffers won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with the school’s fastest time since 1980, while senior Scott Myers won the shot put and sophomore Robbie Johnston was second in the pole vault at the 25-team extravaganza. Jeffers, a McKay High graduate who transferred to SOU from Auburn University last fall, nosed out Weber State’s Seth Steed by three-hundredths of a second and easily qualified for the NAIA Championships in what was the third-best steeplechase performance in school history (9:19.24). Myers, the defending NAIA shot put champion, outlasted 30 other competitors with a 57-0¼ heave, and the North Medford High product placed second in the discus with a season-best 166-9 throw. Johnston blew past the NAIA meet automatic qualifying standard in the pole vault by launching himself 16 feet, 6¾ inches in the 17-man competition, and junior Grant Brannaman equaled his personal best with a fourth-place mark of 15-1. Junior All-American Trevor Palmer and senior Ross Dexter — key members of Southern Oregon’s NAIA 10th-place 2005 cross country team — each had shining moments. Palmer placed second among 56 racers in the 800 with a 1:51.41 — .23 better than his previous career-best that ranked second all-time at the Ashland school. The Central Point native missed winning by three-hundredths of a second. Dexter achieved a provisional NAIA qualifying mark with a seventh-place PR time of 3:56.90 in the 49-competitor 1,500 meters, and the LaPine product was 18th in the 800 with a season-best 1:57.38. On the women’s side, freshman Ixel Sanchez was SOU’s highest placer, taking 12th in the 3,000 in 10:32.43. Junior Emily Dunn was 17th among 42 in the 100 meters (12.74) and 18th in the 200 among 45 runners.
