Oh, what a beautiful baby notice Please explain how you choose which babies to list in the birth announcements. I know there are other babies born, so how do you choose which to list? Thank you for this new arena to get answers. -- Carol S., Medford You're right, Carol: More babies are born in the Rogue Valley than the Mail Tribune's lists show. Several factors conspire to make it so. First, providing the information to the newspaper is optional, much like telling us when you're newly engaged or married. Some people just don't want to tell the world about their baby's birth. Concerns about the baby's safety have played a role for some after recent publicity about the potential for kidnapping. Other times it's simply a privacy issue for the parents. Announcements of home births are less likely to appear than announcements of hospital births. While local hospitals tell new parents how to get in touch with the newspaper to announce a birth or even provide forms they can use to do so, in a home birth parents don't have that guidance. The newspaper generally lists all the births it learns about. We ask only that the parents are Rogue Valley residents or lived here previously, and that they -- not a friend or relative -- provide the birth information.
