Offered in a direct, keen tone of voice, one almost has to think about it. "I don't know," I mumbled, hurrying in for a late lunch. "I need to see a menu." The take-out menu was promptly placed in my hands, but my eyes already had strayed to the specials board offering stir-fried asparagus. It came with a choice of chicken, pork, beef or shrimp and steamed rice or pork fried rice. It cost $9.99 for a lunch portion, $11.99 for the dinner portion. Seems I'd missed lunch and would have to order the full-sized helping. But it would match my appetite. Hmmm, I thought, the asparagus with chicken, of course, along with the pork fried rice and a side of spring rolls would satisfy just about all of the food cravings I am having at this moment. "I'll take it to go," I answered firmly, and tucked the folded, paper menu into my shoulder bag. This was my first visit to Yu's Yummy Yan's, having given up on finding good Chinese food in Medford years ago. I think back to Hung Far Low on 82nd Avenue in my old home of Portland. Or the notorious Rickshaw Charlie's in the city's Chinatown, which had great food but eventually was discovered to be a cover for organized crime.  Nonetheless, some coworkers and friends highly recommended Yu's, and I'm glad I finally got around to visiting the restaurant. I think I've found my new Friday night Chinese take-out spot. "OK," the young lady at the counter said as she whisked my order into the kitchen. I had only a few moments to look around before she returned with a bag of Fold-Paks loaded with steaming hot food. Nestled on top was a white paper sack containing a small tub of sweet and sour sauce, a smaller tub of some authentic-looking hot mustard, packets of sesame seeds and soy sauce, and two Chinese fortune cookies. The restaurant isn't all that large. The space has a low ceiling, made to seem lower by the dark, floral carpeting. Colorful lighting fixtures lend cheer to the room, and there are large booths upholstered in turquoise vinyl. Only a couple of booths were full, but — from the stack of take-out menus at the counter — a lot of business must come in and out the front doors. I took my order back to my desk and ate before I finished the day. The stir-fry was packed with cut, perfectly cooked asparagus, slivered onion, fancy cut carrots and chicken and simmered in a light, brown broth. The rice was fluffy and on the light side with very little grease, as were the spring rolls filled with finely shredded cabbage and carrot. I think Kung Pao Chicken might hit the spot next Friday night. Yummy Yan's is at 1703 E. McAndrews Road. It is open daily.
