SOU hosts e-commerce conference By Joanna Collins ASHLAND Eyeballs 2000, an Internet marketing and e-commerce conference, is scheduled for July 7-8 at Southern Oregon University. The event, coordinated by Dr. Chuck Jaeger in SOUs School of Business, is expected to draw 150 people, including Rogue Valley residents and professionals from throughout the West Coast. "The business community needs to know how to do Internet business because if you dont," says Jaeger, "you wont be able to compete in the future." The two-day seminar features speakers from SOU, Bear Creek Corp., IBM E-Business Solutions, Ashlands Project A and others in the technology field. U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden also is expected. The first day concentrates on general topics and includes a panel discussion. Wyden, who Jaeger calls a leader in the field, will talk about the future of the Internet and how to use it productively. Another highlight on July 7 is a key-to-success speech by Catty Fultineer, senior vice president and general manager of direct marketing at Bear Creek Corp. "They are one of the biggest and best direct-marketing companies in the world today," says Jaeger. The second day, July 8, offers a series of workshops for business leaders, educators, developers and government officials. Jaeger says they will break into small groups to develop practical strategies for Internet business. "We want people to have fun," says Jaeger. "We want them to learn together, network together." Networking and fun wont be a problem with several optional activities planned, including golf, plays and jet board rides. Jaeger says the Rogue Valley is the perfect place for the conference, since several communities are on the "cutting-edge" with the Ashland Fiber Network and US Wests digital lines. "There arent a lot of communities around the state where technology resources are available to (citizens) like here," says Jaeger. The seminar costs $199, with group discounts available.
