South boys earn first SOC tennis win GRANTS PASS - The South Medford boys tennis team turned in a complete performance Tuesday, earning its first Southern Oregon Conference win of the year. South Medford swept all five singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Grants Pass. Reilly Ferrell got things started for the Panthers with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Levi Brown. "Reilly had a wonderful match at No. 1," said South Medford coach Jackie Barker. "He really showed a lot of character after losing that first set and orchestrated a good match." The Panthers dropped two doubles matches but the duo of Don Jeter and Tim Carpenter finished things off by sneaking past Jesse Stowell and Ken Slama in a marathon 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) contest. "We had good performances from everyone tonight," said Barker. "We're extremely young and having to spend a lot of time on the fundamentals, but the kids are really starting to pick things up." Track and Field GLENDALE INVITATIONAL - At Glendale, Jordan Ferrell won three events in leading Cascade Christian to second place in a six-team field. Cascade's girls placed third. Ferrell won the shot put (39-11/2), discus (114-6) and javelin (146-0). Zach Mellow won the high jump (5-10) and Rich Cummings won the 400 meters (57.2). Sam Kinney added a second in the 200 (26.0). Pacific won the boys team title with 163 points, while Cascade Christian had 98, Days Creek 76, Glendale 74, Elkton 24 and Umpqua Valley Christian 20. In the girls competition, Pacific won with 105 points, while Glendale had 100, Cascade Christian 90, Umpqua Valley Christian 65, Days Creek 61 and Elkton 51. Cascade's Kelly Clarke won the shot put (33-3) and was second in the discus (88-10). Shannon Roberts won the 100 hurdles (18.4) and Mary O'Brien won the 3,000 (14.44.9).
