Whether it's in observance of Lent, because of seafood's nutritional value or just because they love the taste of a well prepared fish dish, they'd be hard-pressed to find a local seafood restaurant that's better than The Wharf, located at 827 W. Jackson St., in Medford. Since the fresh seafood market and eatery opened in 2007, The Wharf, open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, has earned numerous Reader's Choice Awards and rave reviews in these Tempo pages. My two recent visits there served as great reminders why it's such a Medford mainstay. Faults are few, mostly related to parking challenges at peak times, and time after time I walk out those double doors satisfied. On one visit, I went for a dish that's on many a menu in Southern Oregon, fish and chips, but The Wharf's approach is simply in a different league. Lovers of the dish can choose between salmon, cod and halibut — all sourced from Alaska, breaded in beer batter and fried. I got the two-piece cod basket for $9.99. The market has earned a reputation for some of the freshest seafood in the area, and I'm sure that's part of what makes its fish and chips stand out, but the preparation elevates the result. The word "fresh" isn't commonly associated with fried food, but the adjective describes fryer oil recently changed and food served piping hot. The fish is served with steak fries, a side of crisp, juicy cole slaw and tartar sauce with just the right amount of dill flavor. I also ordered a cup of their creamy New England clam chowder ($3.99). With a thick, substantial texture and the right amount of potatoes, clams and onions, it's a side that's easy to recommend. On an earlier visit, I tried their fish tacos ($9.99), which were served piping hot. Those with lighter appetites could probably split the two generous, grilled-cod tacos, served on corn tortillas with cabbage and fresh salsa. For my appetite, the two tacos made for a nice, substantial yet not-too-heavy lunch. The Wharf had friendly and reasonably speedy service — a concern of mine when fitting a lunch in a busy workday. My visits were well under half an hour from when I was seated to when I signed the receipt.
