BOYS PREP SOCCER Staver helps St. Mary's upend Henley Brian Staver provided the difference for St. Mary's in their District 6 boys soccer win over Henley on Thursday. Henley played unbeaten St. Mary's to a standstill until the 39th minute when Staver knocked home the Crusaders' only goal of the contest on a penalty kick for a 1-0 win. "We really dominated the first half," said St. Mary's coach Eric Wolff. "Actually we should have led by three or four at the break." Andrew Lundt picked up the shutout in goal for the Crusaders. "Andrew played very well," said Wolff. "He made some amazing saves there in the second half." The Crusaders (5-0, 2-0 District 6) also received help defensively from Peter Staver and Brandon Frankel. PHOENIX 10, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 -- At Talent, Jesse Shorland had three goals and three assists and Anthony Machado earned his third straight shutout in leading the Pirates to a District 6 win. Masaya Yano added two goals and an assist, while Al Albright played a stellar game at stopper for the Pirates (5-1-1, 2-0 District 6). Sean Cowley added a goal and two assists, while John Hendricks had a goal and an assist. Rhema Nelson, Matt Steffensrud and Albright each scored goals. Phoenix led 3-0 at halftime but scored five goals in a 10-minute span early in the second half to break the game open. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, NORTH VALLEY 2, OT -- At Hawthorne Field, Aaron Beamish scored on a penalty kick eight minutes into the second overtime to give the Challengers (2-1) a District 6 victory. Beamish was fouled in the penalty box by North Valley goalkeeper Lee Manes to set up the final goal. Manes was called for hooking Beamish as the Cascade player broke toward the goal. North Valley controlled action in the first half, but Cascade was able to keep the Knights off the scoreboard. Beamish scored in the 44th minute, only to have John Handley even the score at 1-all 10 minutes later. Cascade's Tyler Miles scored on an 18-yard blast at the 56th minute, but North Valley once again had an answer as Jeff Gavthier scored in the 60th minute to help send the game into overtime. ROGUE RIVER 6, MAZAMA 0 -- At Rogue River, Zach Wilken scored the game's only first-half goal, then Rogue River secured its first District 6 victory with an offensive barrage after intermission. In the second half, the Chieftains (3-3, 1-1 District 6) received two goals from Chuck Taylor and single scores from Travis Yawn, Mark Bradford and Jesse O'Gara. Sophomores Matt Vaaccher and Tony Coma along with junior Justin Snow played aggressively in the defensive zone for the Chieftains. Non-conference NORTH MEDFORD 2, HIDDEN VALLEY 1 -- Johnny Whitaker scored the winning goal at the 65th minute to lift North Medford (4-3-1) to the non-conference victory at Varsity Field. Hidden Valley (2-2-1) shocked the Black Tornado when Matt Johnson scored from the top of the box on a pass from Garrett Drummond with only 48 seconds gone in the game. North Medford tied the game before halftime when Danny Zimmer and Aaryn Abbott came off the bench and hooked up for a goal. Abbott provided Zimmer a crossing pass, which Zimmer converted from 10 yards out. On the game winner, Abbott won the ball on a Hidden Valley goal kick and made an effective pass to Whitaker. After getting off to a sluggish start, North Medford controlled the midfield and kept much of the action in the Mustangs' defensive zone. The Black Tornado had a decided advantage in offensive opportunities, with goalkeeper Tim VanderStoel answering the challenge for Hidden Valley. North Medford coach Rich Garcia was not at the game because he was hospitalized due to a gall bladder condition. Garcia said he expects to be back on the sidelines for North's conference road match Saturday against Crater. EAGLE POINT 3, NORTH BEND 0 -- At North Bend, P.R. Buracton had a hand in all three Eagle Point goals in the non-conference win. Buracton scored at the 12-minute mark off an assist by Brandon Johnson. Buracton earned assists on two goals by Brad Crawford, the first in the 20th minute and the second in the 30th minute. Thomas Ussary earned his first shutout for Eagle Point (4-2-2).
