PREP ROUNDUP 11-run sixth inning carries Phoenix past North Phoenix held the advantage in only two innings in Wednesday's baseball tilt with North Medford, but that's all the Pirates would need in edging the Black Tornado, 12-11, in eight innings at Miles Field. Phoenix (1-0) sent 16 players to the plate and scored 11 runs in the sixth inning, then capped the game with a run in the eighth to win its opener. North Medford's Jared Pagnini went the first five innings on the mound, shutting out the Pirates by allowing only three hits with nine strikeouts. Unfortunately for the Black Tornado, things fell apart from there as Phoenix took advantage of five North errors and nine hits to take a 11-9 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. Dave Westfall had two hits and drove in four runs in the sixth to key the Pirates North Medford (0-1) added two runs to tie the game, but Phoenix responded without a hit in the eighth as pitcher Nate Mayben walked four batters to drive in the winning run. Mayben did have a strong day at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort, while Theron Hull had three hits for Phoenix. Kenny Halpin was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for North, while teammate Phillip DeLaCruz was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Jason Brownell added two doubles. Drew Pierson picked up the win for Phoenix after entering in the seventh inning. SOUTH UMPQUA 4, EAGLE POINT 2 -- At Eagle Point, South Umpqua scored twice in the top of the eighth and held on to edge the Eagles in the opener for both teams. Micah Mills hit a homerun to spark South Umpqua (1-0) in the fourth inning, with Gabe Steen picking up the win in a relief effort. Charlie Jackson drove in Jake Kleker to put the Eagles on the board in the second inning, while Shawn Cardoza drove in Brian Fiebiger in the fifth for Eagle Point's lone runs. Eagle Point starting pitcher Brian Strodthoff had five strikeouts, while Jessie Stevenson had four and Mike Newmann added five. Boys Tennis YREKA 5, ASHLAND 4 -- At Yreka, Calif., Yreka's Rob Cadell overcame a 6-0 deficit in the first game to defeat Ashland's Dustin Brown at No. 2 singles, then teamed with doubles partner Brett Tsudama to beat Ashland's Eruic Sharp and Eric Boekenoogen at No. 1 doubles as the Miners spoiled the Grizzlies' season-opening tennis match.
