You aren’t alone There hasn’t been any Primatene Mist for sale in stores for months. Why not? I don’t have health insurance and it costs too much for prescription drugs. — Bob E., Medford We found your answer on the Web, Bob, and if it’s any consolation, you’re not alone. There’s a whole section of the Primatene home page dedicated to explaining the inhaler’s disappearance. Apparently there was a run on Primatene when the manufacturer of another asthma product had to recall several million inhalers. That caused Primatene sales to swell, and Wyeth’s inventory was exhausted. Wyeth, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Primatene, says the inhaler shortage may continue in some areas until the end of the year. But while you’re waiting for the inhalers to return, you may want to look for a better approach for treating your asthma. Keith Parrott, a pharmacist at Oregon State University’s School of Pharmacy, says prescription drugs are much more effective for asthma relief than over-the-counter inhalers. If you’re strapped for cash, you might investigate whether you qualify for health care provided by local "safety net" clinics such as the Community Health Center.
