Glencoe fends off game Ashland girls HILLSBORO - Ashland took 10th-ranked Glencoe down to the wire in the second round of the girls basketball Class 4A subtournament Thursday. But two key turnovers late in the game gave Glencoe the opening it needed, and the Crimson Tide pulled out a 57-55 playoff victory. Glencoe, the No. 3 seed from the Metro League, will play at Portland Interscholastic League No. 2 Jefferson on Saturday for a spot in the state tournament. Ashland, which won a Southern Oregon Conference playoff game against Grants Pass to get into the subtournament, completes the season at 13-14. "We stepped up to the challenge against the (10th-ranked team in the Class 4A coaches' poll) in the state," Ashland coach Stephanie Santos said. "But we had way too many turnovers. We had some bad passing angles and tried to force the ball." The Grizzlies connected on 10 3-pointers and outrebounded Glencoe, 31-15. But 24 turnovers and a big disparity from the free-throw line prove costly for Ashland. Glencoe was 13-of-21 from the foul line, while Ashland made 1-of-4 free throws. "The difference from the line was crucial," said Santos. "It was weird. It was like they didn't call anything on them." Ashland's first-team all-SOC center Marla Morin had a strong outing with 16 points and 15 rebounds. "They were in a zone and anytime she (Morin) got it they collapsed on her," said Santos. "That's how we got a bunch of 3's, because Marla would pass it back out." Morin's 3-pointer from the top of the key tied the game at 53-all late in the fourth quarter. Glencoe's junior post L'trece Pruitt completed a three-point play off a short baseline jumper to give the Crimson Tide a 56-53 lead. Morin's field goal cut the margin to 57-55 with 23 seconds remaining. The Grizzlies trailed 25-22 at halftime, but Ashland came alive in the third quarter behind reserve Kate Morris. The Grizzlies outscored Glencoe 23-17 in the period, with Morris, a sophomore guard, connecting on three of her four 3-pointers. The Raiders, who defeated Bend 46-39 in an opening-round playoff game Tuesday, will travel to Tualatin Saturday with a state tournament berth at stake. Southern Oregon Conference second seed Roseburg finishes the season with a 16-6 record. The Indians shot 26 percent from the field and an icy 10 percent (3-for-28) from 3-point range. "They just sat back in a 3-2 zone and allowed us to shoot," Roseburg first-year coach Bob Feasel said. "We haven't shot that poor all year long. As a coach it was the most frustrating thing." Crescent Valley point guard Laura Hirsh led all scorers with 13 points. Hirsh hit a crucial 3-pointer from just inside the half-court line that gave the Raiders a nine-point lead at the break. "Every time we made a mistake, they hurt us," said Feasel. The Indians never got untracked in the second half and were outscored 21-14. Shannon Burmeister led the Indians with nine points and 10 rebounds. Senior wing Lindsey Heard, who averaged 15 points per game in the SOC, was limited to four points and eight rebounds.
