SOU, which departed its Ashland campus at 5:15 a.m. Saturday and flew here for the game, bolted to a 23-0 second-quarter lead. But penalties — the Raiders set a school record with 17 — and the Battlin’ Bears’ resolve limited the damage, SOU winning 37-13 in its third of four straight road games. The Raiders, ranked seventh in the nation, returned home by chartered plane Saturday evening. "It was a heck of a long day," said Southern Oregon coach Jeff Olson, "and we started out fast, which was a key for us." But the Raiders went into a lull midway through the second quarter, about the time star running back Dusty McGrorty left the game with a knee injury, and they didn’t regain momentum until late in the third quarter. SOU pulled away from a 23-13 advantage with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. McGrorty, No. 2 in the nation in scoring and No. 3 in rushing, ran for 156 yards on only 12 carries. But he was pulled down from behind on a long run in the second quarter, catching his foot in the turf and wrenching his knee. "The whole mood of the team just kind of went with him," said Olson, who described the injury as a sprain and doesn’t think it is as serious as it first looked. McGrorty didn’t play thereafter. SOU led 23-7 on the strength of three touchdown passes by junior quarterback Dan Woodward. He hit Danny Negra for 4 yards just 43 seconds into the game, then found Bobby Poeltl from 7 yards out with barely three minutes gone. Matt Zosel got into the act just before the end of the period. But soon after Steve Baker added a 28-yard field goal to make it 23-0, mistakes started to mount. The Raiders wound up with 153 penalty yards. "That backed us up a lot and put us in holes on both sides of the ball," said Olson. "We seem to lose focus and concentration at certain points of games, and that obviously sets us way back. It’s been somewhat of a trend." He saw the same thing a week earlier in the first half against Humboldt State, but the Raiders regrouped. "You have to win on the road if you want to be a good team," said Olson, "and you have to stay focused at all times." Woodward wound up 15-for-23 for 151 yards. Poeltl led the receiving corps with six grabs for 76 yards. Brandon White and Caleb Krantz handled the rushing chores in McGrorty’s absence, gaining 48 and 40 yards, respectively. Krantz had one of the fourth-quarter TDs, a 2-yard run, and Nate Vander Kley had the other, a 3-yard pass from Brandon Griffith. SOU had 305 rushing yards and had a total yardage edge of 520-309. Volleyball SOU 30-30-30, NORTHWEST COLLEGE 15-25-17 — At Ashland, 19th-ranked Southern Oregon excelled in every category in the Cascade Conference sweep at McNeal Pavilion. The second-place Raiders (12-3, 8-1 Cascade) needed a little more than an hour to dispatch the fourth-place Eagles (9-5, 5-4 Cascade), and they captured the school’s ninth consecutive home victory dating to last season. Four Southern Oregon players finished with seven or more kills, and junior All-American outside hitter Kristina Matchett led all players with 14 in 23 swings. She also accounted for a team-best 11 of SOU’s 40 digs. The Raiders also broke the school’s three-game match service ace record for the second time this season with 16, including a career-high six from sophomore defender Carrie Manning. Junior hitter Sara Tatom equaled a personal-best with seven blocks, helping SOU out-block the Eagles 11-3. For Northwest, former Cascade Christian High star Kelly Clarke had four kills and two blocks in the losing cause. Women’s Soccer SOU 1, CASCADE 1 — At Ashland, Southern Oregon took a program-record 50 shots, but only one found the net, leading to a double-overtime deadlock at University Field. The Raiders (3-7-1, 2-4-1 Cascade Conference) interrupted a five-game losing skid by outshooting the last-place Thunderbirds (1-10-1, 1-8-1 Cascade) 50-9 in the 110-minute contest. SOU also set a mark for corner kicks (19), while junior midfielder Deborah Bigelow set an individual record with 11 shots. Cross Country WOMEN, MEN 18TH — At Salem, the SOU women’s and men’s teams each placed 18th at the massive Willamette Invitational. There were 35 women’s teams, 40 men’s teams. For the SOU women, Roe Hadley placed 38th over 5,000 meters in 18:44.05. Helen Rarick was 82nd in 19:09.0 and Kierra Bernales 88th in 19:12.08. For the SOU men, Sean Peterson was 56th in 25:48.26 for 8,000 meters. Ryan Pfeilwas 97th in 26:18.27 and Zach Worth 105th in 26:22.75.
