Hevern helped the Comets get off to a good start en route to a 50-36 girls basketball victory over Milwaukie Tuesday. Hevern got her first start of the season when sophomore point guard Kenna Reiter suffered a nose bleed in pregame warm-ups. Hevern had a field goal, two steals and two assists in the opening period as Crater took a 15-10 lead. "That really gave us a boost early," Crater coach Scott Dippel said, "and gave everybody confidence that we would be OK." Advertisement Crater (6-1) opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a commanding 22-10 advantage. And when the Comets went on a 5-0 burst to begin the second half, the Mustangs’ deficit grew to 33-17. "The biggest thing in the second quarter was they could not find anyone to match up with the speed of Jessica Wasniewski," said Dippel. "And we moved her around." Wasniewski, a 6-foot senior, led Crater with 14 points and eight rebounds. She also had two steals. "(Wasniewski) is starting to get some confidence in her perimeter game in addition to her post-up skills," said Dippel. "She’s getting more balance in her game."
