Compher unseated defending Skyline Conference boys golf champion Blaine Corkhill of Henley and the Pirates won the conference title for the second straight year Tuesday at Eagle Point Golf Course. Compher edged the senior Corkhill for medalist honors by one stroke in the two-day tournament. Compher trailed by one stroke after the opening day at the Running Y Resort Friday. Compher’s tournament scores were 73-75 for a 148, while Corkhill came in at 72-77 for a 149. Illinois Valley junior Parish Evans posted the low score Tuesday at Eagle Point with a 2-over-par 74. Compher played two groups in front of Corkhill Tuesday. "It might have helped (Compher) that he didn’t have to go shot for shot against (Corkhill)," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "He played his own game all day long and it might have been to his advantage." Advertisement Phoenix freshman Daniel Engle, who shot a 77 in the same group with Corkhill at Eagle Point, finished third overall in the tournament with a 180. Phoenix completed district with a two-day total of 620 to 663 for second-place Henley. Mazama, which trailed the Pirates by four strokes after the first day, fell to third with a 677. The top five individuals and two best teams advance to the state tournament May 15-16 at Eagle Crest in Redmond. "If we go up to the state tournament and put up the numbers we’ve put up all year long we have a chance to get a trophy," said Walker, whose team finished sixth last year. "We’ve played the best teams in the state this year and we’ve done OK." The top four teams at state receive trophies. SOC TOURNAMENT — At Grants Pass, Grants Pass’ Andy Maphet won the conference individual title by five strokes over teammate Calen Nicholson and the Cavemen triumphed as both the Southern Oregon Conference regular-season and tournament champions at the Grants Pass Golf Club. Ashland, which edged North Medford by two strokes in the conference tournament, receives the league’s No. 2 bid to the state tournament May 15-16 at the OGA Golf Course at Woodburn. North Medford’s Brad Johnson and John Clarke finished among the top five individuals to qualify for state. Girls Golf DISTRICT 6 TOURNAMENT — At Klamath Falls, the second-day efforts of Jessica Butler and Brooke Butler helped propel Henley to victory at Harbor Links Golf Club. Henley won the team title with an 803, while North Valley was second at 820. Jessica Butler’s 86 was the lowest round of the day, allowing her to finish as the individual runner-up to North Valley’s Ariel Huff, who finished with a two-day score of 177. Brooke Butler’s 95 allowed her to finish fifth overall and earn a trip to state. Hidden Valley’s Dani Hart and Whitney Adderson of St. Mary’s finished third and fourth, respectively, to round out the state qualifiers. Girls Tennis DISTRICT 2 TOURNAMENT — At Sisters, freshman Casey Schein and sophomore Lacey Hall lived up to their No. 1 seed as the St. Mary’s doubles tandem soared to a district doubles title at Black Butte Ranch. Schein and Hall handily defeated Nicole Foti and Delancey Albers of Cascade High in the title match, 6-0, 6-3. Earlier in the day, Schein and Hall rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stayton’s Erica Luna and Sami Boroski. Schein and Hall advanced to the Class 3A/2A/1A state tournament May 19-20 at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club. Marist of Eugene won the team title with 40 points. St. Mary’s and Central High tied for second with 26 points. North Bend was fourth with 24 points and Sisters fifth with 22. Boys Tennis DISTRICT 2 TOURNAMENT — At Monmouth, Cascade Christian freshman Scott Morse won three matches in the first day of the event and secured a state tournament berth. St. Mary’s advanced two players into the round of 32 in singles and one doubles team into the quarterfinals and earned 12 points in the tournament at Western Oregon University. The No. 2-seeded Morse will face third-ranked senior Willie Hudson of Marist in today’s semifinals. The top four singles players and doubles teams advance to the state tournament May 19-20 at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club. Morse knocked off another Marist player, Hayden Rear, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The No. 7-seeded St. Mary’s doubles team of seniors Austin Grant and Sam Moore fell shy of gaining a state tournament berth with a loss in the quarterfinals. Crusader freshman Andrew Jorgenson lost an opening-round match, then bounced back with two wins in the consolation bracket. Jorgenson will play in the consolation semifinals today. Other St. Mary’s singles players eliminated from the tournament were Q Park, Jae Sim and John Ingram. Park won a first-round match, then lost in the second round. Sim lost his initial match, then split a pair of consolation matches. And Ingram lost two straight matches. SOC Track and Field CRATER, GP SPLIT — Nick Nutting blazed to a time of 11.07 in the 100 meters and sailed to a mark of 41-9 in the triple jump in leading the Crater boys to an 81-70 victory. Anna Lovelace ran season-best times of 12.82 in the 100 and 26.6 in the 200 to fuel the GP girls to an 82-62 win. SOUTH MEDFORD SWEEPS — Branson Holm notched a personal best in javelin with a toss of 180-1 to lead South Medford’s boys team over Eagle Point. Holm’s mark is the second best behind North Medford’s Brian Beadle (182-3) in southern Oregon. In girls, Jan Frodsham raced to a 47.73 in the 300-meter hurdles for South, while teammate Katrina Stevens also set a personal best with a 48.29. NORTH MEDFORD SWEEPS — At Ashland, North Medford’s Jason Slowey tossed the shot put 49-3 to notch the second-best mark in southern Oregon in leading the Black Tornado boys past Ashland. Slowey’s mark trails only teammate Johnny Vaigafa (52-7½ ).
