Mail Tribune 100, March 2, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 2, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 2, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 2, 1916 SEVENTH COMPANY PLANNING SMOKER FOR WEDNESDAY The Seventh company is arranging for another of their popular smokers, to be given Wednesday, March 8, at the armory at which special athletic events will be stated somewhat out of the ordinary events of this kind. Through the efforts of the committee in charge of the program the faculty of the University of Oregon has consented to send the champion amateur wrestler of the university to meet the champion of southern Oregon in a bout of two falls out of three. The representative from the University will be Harold Prestel, more familiarly known as "Pretzel," among the students, and the honors of southern Oregon will be upheld by W. C. Edmunds, of Gold Hill, the best man on the mat yet developed in this section. Edmunds has thrown all comers to date and the headliner of the smoker is expected to be worth while. In addition to the big event in the wrestling game, several other interesting bouts have been arranged, among which will be a demonstration of Japanese jiu jitsu style of wrestling, which has not before been seen in Medford. In the Japanese colony of Medford is an expert in this style of self-defense. Nakatani, who holds a certificate of efficiency issued by the national school of Japan in the jiu jitsu art. The Seventh company has secured Nakatani to go on the mat with an opponent for three falls. There will be three boxing events, the participants to be selected from the winners in the previous bouts held between the Seventh company and the Central Point Athletic club. One or two contestants will also come down from Ashland. There will also be curtain raisers in the way of contests in Indian wrestling, "bear scratch," and other amusing athletic traits of skill. The program in detail will be announced within the next two or three days.
