Weaver came off the bench to shine Saturday for the Panthers, supplying a game-clinching defensive stop to help South Medford eke out a 71-70 victory over visiting North Eugene. After Isaiah Adams’ two foul shots with 17 seconds to play gave South (1-1) its first lead since the first quarter, North Eugene opted to run the clock down for the game’s final shot. South’s defensive pressure forced Highlanders standout Alex Brock to give up the ball in the waning seconds, and Weaver swooped in for a blocked shot to secure the nonconference win. "Hopefully that’s kind of the spark that not only ignites us but gives us something that we can build off of," said Panthers head coach Dennis Murphy, whose inexperienced squad struggled for the second straight day. South Medford turned the ball over 14 times in the first half and 18 times overall and allowed a team to shoot over 50 percent from the field for the second straight day as the Highlanders converted 26 of 48 shots (54 percent). "We’re really going to need to get better," said Murphy. "We just didn’t defend very well and you can’t turn the ball over that many times and expect to win." Advertisement Adams scored 19 points to lead the Panthers, who lost 57-51 to South Eugene on Friday, and freshman Michael Harthun had 18 points. Besides the blocked shot, Weaver scored 10 points, pulled down four rebounds and added two steals. Kendall Gielow, who had four rebounds and three assists, made four of his six free throws in the fourth quarter as South outscored the Highlanders 19-10 in the final frame to pull out the win.
