Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 16, 2005 Inmate attempts bed-sheet hanging By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune A Jackson County Jail inmate who was shot at by a sheriff’s deputy last week after allegedly pointing a gun at the officer tried to hang himself Friday inside a four-man jail cell, Sheriff Mike Winters said. Christopher Roby, 37, was taken by ambulance to a Medford hospital following the 10:30 a.m. suicide attempt. Roby’s injuries were not life-threatening, Winters said. Roby used a bed sheet to hang himself. Three other inmates were in the cell at the time, and one of them removed Roby from the sheet after he was hanging for 20 to 30 seconds, Winters said. A sheriff’s deputy was guarding Roby at the hospital late Friday, Winters said. A mental-health worker is expected to evaluate Roby before he is returned to jail. At that point, Winters said Roby will likely be placed in an isolation cell and monitored closely. "I’m sure what will happen is that he will be put on 15-minute (suicide) watches," Winters said. Advertisement The last time an inmate committed suicide at the Jackson County Jail was in January 2004, when Charles Shaw, 40, used a bed sheet to hang himself from an air vent. Roby was arrested Sunday after allegedly robbing his mother’s Gold Hill-area home, then leading sheriff’s deputies on a car chase on Highway 234. The pursuit ended when a deputy positioned a spike strip across the highway that worked to puncture the vehicle’s left front tire, police said. After he was stopped, Roby allegedly aimed a sawed-off shotgun at deputy Greg Schuster, who fired two shots in Roby’s direction. Roby then dropped his weapon and was taken into custody, police said. A Jackson County grand jury earlier this week cleared Schuster of any wrongdoing in connection with the shooting. The grand jury also indicted Roby on felony charges of first-degree robbery, second-degree kidnap, first-degree burglary, unlawful possession of a short-barreled weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm and attempting to elude police in a vehicle. The robbery, kidnap and burglary charges all carry mandatory minimum prison terms upon conviction, under state sentencing guidelines.
