No. 10 Utah humiliates UCLA By The Associated Press Jan 04, 2015 12:00 AM A A SALT LAKE CITY — Delon Wright had 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead a balanced offense for No. 10 Utah in a 71-39 rout of UCLA on Sunday. Jakob Poeltl had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Utes (12-2, 2-0 Pac-12), who beat the Bruins in Salt Lake City for the second straight season. Tony Parker scored 12 points to lead UCLA, which lost its fifth straight. The Bruins (8-7, 0-2) trailed from start to finish. The Bruins shot just 29 percent from the field and were 1 of 11 from 3-point range. Utah's speed and efficient shooting overwhelmed UCLA right from the start. Then the Utes' defense finished off the Bruins, who had a long scoring drought in each half. Washington State 69, California 66 : At Berkeley, Calif., Josh Hawkinson had 18 points and 13 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double, Jordan Railey scored 17 points and Washington State beat California for its first Pac-12 road win in nearly two years. Ike Iroegbu added 12 points including four free throws over the final 36 seconds for the Cougars (7-7, 1-1), who won despite missing nine of their final 12 shots. First-year coach Ernie Kent's team had not won a road game all season and had not won a conference road game since beating Oregon State in Corvallis on Jan. 26, 2013 — a stretch of 15 games. The Cougars ended both streaks with a stiff defense that held the Golden Bears (11-4, 1-1) without a basket for more than eight minutes late in the second half. Jordan Mathews missed a potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer. Colorado 86, USC 65 : At Boulder, Colo., Askia Booker scored 18 points, Dustin Thomas added a career-high 17 and Colorado beat Southern California for its sixth straight win over the Trojans. The Buffaloes (9-5, 2-0 Pac-12) used a 14-0 run late in the first half to break open a tight game. They never gave the Trojans (8-6, 0-2) a chance at a comeback as they hit four straight 3-pointers to start the second half. Nikola Jovanovic led USC with 14 points, while Julian Jacobs added 11. The Trojans went on a 7-0 run midway through the final half, but that spurt was ended when Booker lobbed a pass to Jaron Hopkins, who dunked it over two USC defenders and re-energized the crowd. Colorado pushed the pace in the first half to open up a 43-27 advantage at the break. The Trojans struggled from the field in the opening half, shooting only 36.7 percent. No. 8 Arizona 73, Arizona State 49 : At Tucson, Ariz., Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had 13 points and eight rebounds, and No. 8 Arizona opened the Pac-12 season with a rout over Arizona State. Arizona (12-1) was sharp after an extended break, dominating Arizona State at both ends to quickly turn its rivalry game into a runaway. The Wildcats took control with a big early run while building a 20-point halftime lead and kept the pressure up to get their conference season off to a rousing start. Arizona had a rare good night from the free-throw line, making 16 of 19, and shot 51 percent despite a sloppy second half. Brandon Ashley and Stanley Johnson scored 13 points each. Arizona State (8-6) beat then-No. 2 Arizona in Tempe last season, but had no chance at repeating the upset after finishing with more turnovers (22) than field goals (14).
