Julio Hernan Bombela-Barron, 24, of the 400 block of North Second Street has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and initiating a false report. He pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court. According to an affidavit, a Medford police officer was dispatched to Providence Medford Medical Center Aug. 23 to speak with Bombela-Barron, who had come to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower left leg. Bombela-Barron allegedly told the officer he had been shot by unknown assailants driving a dark-colored vehicle near the 7-11 convenience store on Crater Lake Avenue. Bombela-Barron allegedly said he ran to his friends' house on Spring Street and was taken to the hospital by them, the affidavit said. The officer spoke to the friends who lived on Spring Street. Both said Bombela-Barron had found a pistol inside the apartment and accidentally shot himself, the affidavit said. The officer said he later received a call from Bombela-Barron stating he had made false statements about being shot because he had "freaked out" after shooting himself, the affidavit said. Bombela-Barron pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary in 2010 and pleaded guilty to third-degree assault in 2012 in Jackson County Circuit Court. Both crimes were felonies, court records show.
