Rep. Peter Buckley, D-Ashland, and Sen. Alan Bates, D-Ashland, introduced third-grade students during the morning floor sessions. Third- and fifth-graders participated in the Report Cards program initiated in 1999 by the Oregon Department of Education. Only two other schools, Dilley Elementary in Forest Grove and Fox Hollow French Immersion School, Eugene, matched Jacksonville’s record. "Jacksonville Elementary sets high academic standards for its students, and they consistently rise to the challenge," Buckley told his House colleagues. He said Principal Bob Goerke credits his school’s success to a very active Parent/Teacher Organization that supports school programs with both time and money, along with a common curriculum that helps students feel connected. Advertisement "Jacksonville Elementary is an example to us all of what Oregon schools can achieve with dedication and support," he said. "A quality education is a key to success in life," Bates said. "Jacksonville Elementary sets high academic standards for its students, and they consistently rise to the challenge." A spokesman for the Department of Education, Gene Evans, said the third- and fifth-graders scored 95 percent in both English and math. "That’s a remarkable achievement," he said. Public Instruction Superintendent Susan Castillo presented the students with certificates of excellence at a reception in the Capitol.
