Man sought in attack on transient in Medford Police are looking for a man who they say tried to kill a transient in Medford Wednesday by repeatedly beating him with a piece of metal. John Earl Simon, 71, no permanent address, had severe cuts and bruises on his head and hands when Medford police found him at the Rogue Valley Transportation District transfer station, 200 S. Front St., at 3:40 a.m., said Medford police Lt. Mike Moran. Simon was transported to Rogue Valley Medical Center for treatment, Moran said. The hospital, however, had no patient records for Simon Wednesday evening. Simon told officers the attacker approached him from behind and beat him with a 2-foot-long piece of metal and took his wallet, which contained $10. The metal bar is a building component and may have originated at a construction site across the street from the station, where Simon was sitting on a bench prior to the attack, Moran said. Police knew of no motive for the attack, he said, and Simon told police the suspect said nothing to him before the attack. The assailant faces charges of assault or attempted murder, Moran said. He is described as a white male 35 to 40 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and having medium build. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Medford police Detective Ray Leach at 541-774-2230.
