Library summer County library system offers everything from movies to backyard geology to make the warm months go smoothly By BUFFY POLLOCK for the Mail Tribune The annual summer reading program is about to get under way at Jackson County libraries. So what's all this about stories, singing and music? "We always want to encourage kids to read over the summer, but we know that offering more activities will give them even more reasons to come into the library," said Patt Colwell, Medford library children's department head. So while the libraries are again offering the reading program, which encourages kids to sign up to track the number of books they read between June and August, it also will offer a slew of other activities for families. Movies Kids accompanied by a parent can head to the Central Library in Medford for "Saturday Matinee @ the Library." The children's department will offer family-friendly movies at 1:45 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 12. Advertisement Backyard ecology The Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center will take a collection of spiders, worms and insects on the road to library branches for an ecology program. Reservations, which are required, can be made by calling the library branch. Times for the program are 10:30 a.m. June 20 in Rogue River; 1 p.m. June 20 in Jacksonville; 3 p.m. June 20 in Ruch; 10:30 a.m. June 21 in Eagle Point; 1:30 p.m. June 21 in Prospect; 10 a.m. June 22 in Butte Falls; 1:30 p.m. June 22 in White City; 1 p.m. June 23 in Ashland; 3 p.m. June 23 in Talent; 1:30 p.m. June 27 in Gold Hill; 2 p.m. June 28 in Applegate; 1 p.m. June 29 in Central Point; and 2 p.m. July 6 in Medford. Curtains! Oregon Shadow Theatre www.oregonshadowtheatre.com will bring its shadow-puppet performances to three libraries: the Central Library in Medford at 2 p.m. June 28, the Eagle Point library at 10:30 a.m. June 29 and the Ashland library at 3 p.m. June 29. What is a shadow puppet? It's a flat leather cutout controlled by long rods and moved behind a white screen. The audience sees the puppets as moving shadows. The show runs just under an hour. Stories, stories and ... songs! A lengthy lineup of storytellers, some from out of the area, will appear at library branches this summer. The programs are geared toward school-age kids all library branches offer regular weekly story times for preschoolers; call branches for details. Here's the schedule: Ashland storyteller Debra Zaslow heads to the Eagle Point library June 17 to tell tales from around the world. Her performance begins at 3 p.m. Vancouver, Wash., storyteller Alton Chung will bring tales influenced by superstitions, stories and magic of the Hawaiian islands, where he grew up, to Ashland and Medford libraries. Canby storyteller Anne-Louise Sterry brings her lively songs and stories to five library branches for free performances in July. Eugene storyteller Jeff Defty brings silly stories and tall tales of the South and West to Ashland, Medford and Gold Hill libraries in July. The schedule is 3:45 p.m. July 18 in Ashland, 3:30 p.m. July 19 in Medford and 6:30 p.m. July 19 in Gold Hill. Arizona storyteller Don Doyle, a recipient of the lifetime achivement award from the National Storytelling Network, brings tales influenced by Ireland to three library branches in August. The schedule is 3:45 p.m. Aug. 15 in Ashland; 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16 in Medford and 6 p.m. Aug. 16 in White City. The adventures of Frog and Toad plus other stories by Arnold Lobel will come to life as Ashland's Barry Kraft reads them at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 and 30 at the Ashland library. Eugene's Rich Glauber brings his Music in Action program, a combination of music and storytelling, to six library branches in August. The schedule is 11 a.m. Aug. 1 in White City; 2 p.m. Aug. 1 in Butte Falls; 10:30 a.m. Aug. 2 in Talent; 2 p.m. Aug. 2 in Medford, 11 a.m. Aug. 3 in Ruch and 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3 in Gold Hill. Children's Festival It's not at a library and it has little to do with reading, bu the library and its Storytelling Guild will offer the popular Children's Festival at the Britt Festivals grounds in Jacksonville in July. This year's event includes some four dozen kid-oriented activities. Hours are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 9, 9 a.m. to noon and 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 10 and 9 a.m. to noon July 11. Admission is $2.
